Sorrento (Days 9 & 10)
Saying goodbye to the coast was hard as we had enjoyed the small town feel of Maiori, but we were once again reunited with our coach and on our way to Pompeii (always a blast).
Pompeii in case you missed history class was buried by about 13 to 20 feet of ash and pumice when Mount Vesuvius erupted in AD 79. Today is is still not completely excavated, and remains a fascinating look at life in the region. A lot of the best items reside now in the Naples museum which will will see soon. We had a super local guide for Pompeii, 3rd generation and some time to view on our own or shop for gifts if we wanted and then a lunch break before getting on the coach.

A short ride later and we arrived in Sorrento. A quick check in and we were off for an orientation walk and the best part: a gelato making demonstration and tasting. Finding ourselves on our own, we quickly found a place for some dinner outside with lovely food and a nice bottle of wine just a short stroll from our hotel. It was a very warm day and we were both happy to have dinner outside, as things cooled off a bit. Sorrento was a place I had been many times when I was stationed across the bay, in Naples. Brought back a lot of memories for me and was a treat to show it to Rita.
This was another “free” day so that some could go to Ischia, or Capri or hang out in town: at least til dinner when we are all going to a family home for dinner – yes, all 29 of us.
We chose to hang out in town and found the wood inlay museum and took a self paced tour in the museum showcasing this art that is becoming obsolete. And some shopping and some lunch. We had to be back, ready to go to dinner by 6 p.m.

Savvy Travel Tip: Read the guidebook – yes, it is like school, but you will have an idea about what you are seeing and ways to spend any down time – from museums, to coffee bars, to parks. And take time to just sit at some point as soak up the atmosphere.
The family dinner was certainly a highlight of the trip. They were all so personable and welcoming and the food and homemade wine were all delicious and certainly filling. We leave in the morning with heavier bags and bellies!
